Our own minds, our thoughts, can raise us to the highest levels of creativity and deep thinking or cut us down to the lowest depths of depression or anxiety.
Left unguarded, our mind will take us to all sorts of weird and wonderful places. Some of these places can be quite dark. Anxiety is the result of a human mind out of control or losing it's grip on reality. Anxiety is worrying about imaginary future events. It is our imagination worrying about the future which, of course, hasn't happened and over which we have no control. Anxiety is an imagination veering towards unlikely and unhappy situations and upsetting scenarios. Once anxiety takes hold or becomes a habit, it is difficult to settle and bring under control. It can be done.
The trick is to not leave the mind unguarded. Creativity and focussed intent are the enemy of anxiety. When we are armed with a plan and an intention for what we will do and where we will be going, there is little room for anxiety or catastrophising to get a look in. Don't waste your amazing human imagination on out of control, anxiety ridden thoughts that will bring you down and probably will never happen. The 'monkey mind' can be tamed and reframed and refocussed.
Direct your mind ! Focus your thoughts ! Channel your imagination into some all consuming, challenging, uplifting creative project and your anxieties will atrophy and whither away. A creative project requires planning and focus. It demands a step by step plan of how to get from empty canvas to masterpiece. From ball of wool to exquisitely coloured scarf. It is consuming and overpowering in a good, heady kind of way. Anxious thoughts, cycling negative thoughts, the chaotic monkey mind are no match. Anxiety is no match for a good plan.
We are not talking perfectionism here. There can be as many bumps and lumps and loose threads as required in creating your scarf to allow us to sustain the focus and planning needed to fully immerse ourselves in the creative process however it may look for you.
Begin to paint a masterpiece. Learn that new language. Create a green and lush fern garden. Begin weekly visits to the nearby nursing home and find someone to cheer. Take up baking again. Weekly Yoga. Family movie night. Knit squares for quilts for refugees in need. Begin your journal. Tweet messages about your passionate subjects. Join a choir or at least sing more arias in the shower.
Attend a Creative Weekend Retreat and practice calm, centred thinking and ways to keep the mind creative and focussed. Design your weekly Habits of Happiness where your schedule is active and positive and there is less time for the old patterns that make you unhappy. Pull the bike out of the garage and dust off the cobwebs. Research film festivals screening in your area. Buy a range of body paint colours, get naked and go all Van Gogh on your partners skin. Paint up an old bookcase. Write paper and pencil letters once a week to dear friends.
Wake with a plan. A focus. An intention. A direction.
The very next step you plan to take. Again, anxiety is no match for a good plan !
If you want a happy day, plan for it. Don't wake and hope ! It's not about waiting to see what will happen. It's about creating the happiness we want. Creating the relationships we want. Creating the work satisfaction we have longed for. If you want warmer more satisfying connections and relationships, plan for them. Create them. Consider the steps to follow to allow you hopes and dreams to come to fruition and then TAKE THE FIRST STEP TOWARD MAKING IT HAPPEN ! Plan for it. Create it. Intend it. Envision it.
